Sincere words from the bottom of Mr. J.K.’s heart (56 years old, Austrian citizenship) to the doctors of Vinmec International Hospital after his broken left leg was successfully healed.
In May 2014, Mr. J.K. fell down some stairs. His broken left femur was surgically treated in a hospital in Hanoi to stabilize the broken bone using splints and bone screws. Unfortunately even 7 months later, he still needed crutches to walk. One day around that time, he felt the pain suddenly intensify and realized that his left thigh was so curved he could not stand up. He went to have a health check at Vinmec International Hospital. It turned out that 30 years before, Mr. K. also had broken the same left femur close to the knee . He had splint and bone screws surgery at the time, with 4 screws remaining, including a broken one deep in the marrow canal.

Based on the clinical examination results and an x-ray film of the leg, Dr. Nguyen Dac Nghia – Head of Vinmec International Hospital’s Surgery Department said: “The left femur has not healed properly and the splint fracture is bent. The only hope is to have a surgery to re-stabilize the femur with internal marrow nail with latch.” As an experienced expert, Dr. Nghia initially removed all the screws, including the broken screw deep inside the marrow canal. Then the patient, through surgery, had an intramedullary rod. With this method, when the patient stands up, gravity is pressed along the femoral shaft fracture, so the broken bone should be firm immediately. Only 3 days after the surgery, Mr. K. was able to walk with crutches. One month later, he could walk using a cane without pain. Mr. J.K. recently visited Vinmec International Hospital for a checkup. The X-ray film results showed that the broken bone has started to heal. In his working environment, Mr. K. can now walk normally. However, outside the house or office, it is recommended that he carry his cane just for precaution.
Talking happily about his health status now, he said: “I wish I had known about Vinmec earlier. Through the internet, I learned about Vinmec International Hospital and Dr. Nghia, the hospital’s expert in orthopedic trauma surgeries. When visiting, I was really satisfied with the expertise of the doctors and the quality of the hospital services.”
In speaking about the intramedullary rod, Dr. Nguyen Dac Nghia added: “Currently this is the best treatment method for a long tube broken bone with long tube. Thanks to the orthopedic technology the surgery requires, only a minimal skin incision (3 – 4cm) was needed to insert pins into the canal and then close both ends with latches: broken bones are straightened and firmly fixed without having to open into the broken area like the bone splints and screws method. Patients have shorter rehabilitation time, minimal scars, and experience considerably less pain. However this method does require a high degree of skills proficiency and coordination between the trauma surgeon and the radiologist during surgery. Immediately after surgery, patients also need active support from the Department of Rehabilitation to exercise to strengthen and quickly return to normal life. At Vinmec, these techniques and processes are done routinely, with 100% success rate of treated cases.
